Whether it be after a long day at work or even a day off, it's more common we reach for the chips versus fruit. Why? Because for some reason we feel more satisfied when we binge eat a bag of chocolate, a bowl of ice cream, or a pizza (yes, the whole thing.) But what if I told you that you can eat healthy food that will satisfy all of your cravings (if not more than junk food ever could) without having to reap the consequences of fatigue, unwanted weight, breakouts, moodiness, and health issues? Well, my friends. You're in luck!
There is a major misconception that eating healthy consists of tasteless food and having to get rid of the things that essentially make our food taste so good. Take salad dressing, for example. It's not a secret that ranch or bleu cheese dressing is terrible for you, but that doesn't mean you have to substitute it with lemon juice and olive oil or something very plain. In fact, when it comes to eating organic and vegan, especially, you have more options than you do with processed food. The key is getting creative, while always keeping in mind to only eat organic, non-GMO, and preservative-free food items.
I recently took a trip to the Dr Smood organic cafein Wynwood, where one of their nutrition experts hosted us and gave us the rundown on what's really in our food, as well as health and food myths, and more. Not to mention, we got to try their most popular menu items, which is always a plus!
Dr Smood was founded in 2014 by the original founder of PANDORA jewelry, Rene Sindlev. Not everything is vegan, though the majority of their menu items are; however, everything is 100% organic, non-GMO with no preservatives, and is sourced from the most pure and high-quality distributors in the world. One of my favorite things about Dr Smoodis that they think seasonally with their ingredients. Meaning, if avocados are out of season, they refuse to lower their standards and purchase from a distributor of lesser-quality for the sake of never running out of menu items. How many places can say they are less concerned with making an extra dollar versus never venturing from their commitment to provide the same level of quality consistently? Very few!
We kicked it off with their organic quinoa salad (left), which contains quinoa, spinach, pinenuts, cranberries, green onion, coconut oil and indian spices like cumin, turmeric, tandoori, masala, nutmeg and Himalayan salt. My mom was vegan for many years and ate quinoa with almost every meal, since it serves as a major source of protein.
PRO TIP:You can put quinoa in just about anything (casseroles, wraps, omelettes, fruit bowls... the list goes on and on.) I often replace rice with quinoa, since it's a much healthier grain.
To the right is their organic kale works salad, consisting of red cabbage, kale, cacao nibs, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, green apple, parsley, goji berries and raisins, topped with their signature dressing made from cashews, cilantro, goji berries, lime, Himalayan salt and dates. It's unbelievably delicious, and this special dressing gives processed dressings a run for their money!
Next up are my personal favorites - the power sandwiches. What makes them so powerful? Their performance bread made with spelt and millet flakes and house made vegan pesto, of course! My favorite isthe wild caught salmon sandwich (upper-right), which includes house made vegan cream cheese, avocado and tomato. Yum! P.S. I put the signature dressing that comes with the kale salad on my sandwiches, and it's delicious!
*SIDE NOTE: Always opt for wild caught fish over farm raised. The difference? Wild caught means the fish were actually caught in their natural environment, whereas farm raised fish are raised in tanks submerged in fresh or salt water, depending on the fish. Wild caught fish are little more expensive, but your health is priceless.
avocado, tomato and pesto, as well as the vegan sandwich with hummus, avocado, spinach, and Dr Smood's signature pesto dressing.
The unique idea behind their juices is giving your body what it needs based on your mood. Their six different mood categories are power, immunity, beauty, detox, energy and health. We tried the organic fruit juice no. 3 (upper left) and the organic DrS slimmer juice. Both were so delicious!

Your body gravitates towards certain color fruits and vegetables based on what it needs? Different color foods have certain health benefits, so based on what you're lacking is what you will naturally gravitate towards. The body is an amazing thing. Listen to it, and don't ignore what it tells you.
They saved the best for last - coffee and chocolate milk. Your basic chocolate milk (left) just got a little less basic. It's cold pressed, vegan, non-dairy, organic milk, and is made with Brazilian nuts, dates, cacao nibs, cacao powder, cinnamon and vanilla. The Immortality Coffee Latte (right) is cold-brewed and infused with chaga. We mixed them together and I instantly replaced any desire for unhealthy sweets with this delicious blend of chocolatey goodness. It's a must!

*When you detox you shouldn't drink coffee.
*Coffee numbs your brain and tells you you're not tired versus actually waking you up?
*Medium roast coffee is the ideal, healthy-balanced coffee. Darker coffee is more acidic and contains less caffeine, therefore you have to drink more of it to get the energy you're trying to attain.
